What is this treatment?

The dentist removes inflamed or infected tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and disinfects the canals, then fills and seals them.


The tooth is later protected with a filling or crown when needed.

What to expect

  1. We review your symptoms and take digital X-rays

  2. The tooth and nearby area are numbed

  3. A small opening is made in the tooth

  4. The inside is cleaned, shaped, filled, and sealed

  5. A temporary or final restoration is placed

  6. A crown may be recommended, especially for a back tooth

Is a root canal painful?

The tooth is numbed during treatment. It may feel sore afterward, but the purpose of treatment is to remove the cause of pain.


How many visits will I need?

Many cases are treated in one or two visits. The number depends on the tooth, infection, and treatment plan.


Will I need a crown?

Many back teeth need a crown because they carry strong chewing forces. We will explain what your tooth needs.


Can antibiotics replace a root canal?

Antibiotics may help some spreading infections, but they do not remove infected tissue from inside the tooth.


What happens if I do nothing?

Pain or infection may worsen and the tooth may become harder or impossible to save.
