Daily Wear and Care
What to Do Today
• Start with soft foods cut into small pieces.
• Chew slowly on both sides at the same time.
• Practice speaking and reading out loud.
• Follow the wear schedule we gave you.
What to Expect Next
Tomorrow
• Remove and rinse the dentures after eating.
• Clean them daily with a denture brush and denture cleaner.
• Brush your gums, tongue, and roof of your mouth with a soft brush.
• Remove the dentures at night unless we give you different instructions.
Days 2-3
• Extra saliva, a mild lisp, and small sore spots can be normal.
• Keep practicing with soft foods and speech.
• Call us for sore spots. Do not file or bend the dentures.
Days 4-7
• Eating and speaking should get easier.
• Keep the dentures clean and remove them at night.
• Keep your adjustment visits.
Later Healing
• Your gums and bone change over time.
• Dentures may need adjustment, a reline, or replacement.
• Keep regular mouth and denture exams.
Pain Medicine
Most people do not need pain medicine. If you are sore and the medicines are safe for you, use the adult pain guide given by the office.
Adult doses only. Use these medicines only if they are safe for you.
• Mild or moderate pain: Take ONE — ibuprofen up to 600 mg OR acetaminophen up to 1,000 mg.
• More pain: Take BOTH together.
• Wait at least 6 hours before the next dose. Do not take more than 4 doses in 24 hours.
• Do not take more than 2,400 mg of ibuprofen or 4,000 mg of acetaminophen in 24 hours.
• Check all medicine labels for acetaminophen. Ask us, your doctor, or a pharmacist if you are not sure.
• Do not take either medicine if a doctor has told you to avoid it.
Normal Healing
• More saliva at first
• A mild lisp
• Mild pressure or small sore spots
• Food feeling different
• Slow improvement with practice

• A cut, blister, or ulcer
• Dentures that are too loose to eat or speak
• A crack, chip, or broken tooth
• Pain that keeps you from wearing the dentures

• Trouble breathing
• Severe swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow
• Bleeding you cannot control

Should I sleep with my dentures?
No. Remove them at night unless we give you different instructions.
How do I clean them?
Use a denture brush and denture cleaner. Rinse well.
Can I use toothpaste?
Regular toothpaste can scratch dentures. Use a denture cleaner.
Can I use hot water?
No. Hot water can change the shape.
What if they hurt?
Call us for an adjustment. Do not adjust them yourself.
